.com vs Country Domain (.de, .co.uk, .nl): Which Should You Pick?

Should you go .com or your country's domain? SEO impact, brand perception, and the case for buying both.

Starting a new business. Brand name "Revetie." revetie.com is being sold by a domain squatter for €5,000. revetie.de is free for €15. Which makes sense?

This is one of those "it depends" answers. Let's break it down.

The case for .com

  • Globally recognized. "Find us at domain dot com" is universal.
  • Resale value. A good .com is an asset you can sell later.
  • TLD prestige. People perceive .com as "real," country TLDs as "local" — unfair, but real.
  • Easier international SEO. If you expand to other markets, .com adapts.

The case for country TLDs (.de, .co.uk, .nl, .fr, .it)

  • Local SEO advantage — small. Google takes a country TLD as a geo-signal, but the effect is around 5%, dwarfed by content quality.
  • Way cheaper. A good .com can cost €5,000+ in resale; a country TLD is €5-30/year.
  • Trust signal in domestic markets. German B2B audiences expect .de. UK audiences expect .co.uk.
  • Restricted registration in some cases — .com.tr requires a Turkish business registration, which limits abuse.

Real SEO impact

The myth: "Country TLDs rank better in their country." Not exactly true.

Google's geo-targeting works through Search Console settings, not just the TLD. Even with a .com, you can set "Target country: Germany" and rank fine. Conversely, .de gets implicit geo-targeting.

If your content is in German, your hosting is anywhere in Europe (even Hetzner Helsinki), the ranking gap between .com and .de is marginal. What matters more: content depth, backlinks, technical performance.

If your brand .com is free, just take it

Free .com? Not even a question. Buy it for €15/year. Buy it before applying for a trademark, so nobody picks it up to extort you.

If your brand .com is being sold, decide by price

Common scenarios:

  • Under €1,000: Buy it. Solid investment.
  • €1,000-€5,000: Buy it if budget allows; otherwise wait 1-2 years.
  • €5,000+: Most SMBs walk away. Adjust your brand name slightly, or settle for the country TLD.

The most common solution: buy both

Ideal: yourbrand.com AND yourbrand.de (or .co.uk, etc.). Total: €30-100/year.

Make .com your primary site, redirect the country TLD to it. This way:

  • Customers reach you regardless of what they type
  • Brand is protected (no one can grab .de and run a similar business)
  • SEO stays clean (canonical URL is the .com)

Country-by-country considerations

  • Germany (.de): Heavy preference for .de in B2B. Buy both, primary on .de if you only sell in DACH.
  • UK (.co.uk): Mixed — startups go .com, traditional businesses go .co.uk. London tech: .com or .io.
  • Netherlands (.nl): Strong .nl preference, but .com works fine for international-facing brands.
  • France (.fr): Strong domestic preference for .fr.
  • Switzerland (.ch): Premium feel, but .com is fine.

If your business is domestic-only, country TLD is enough. If you'll go cross-border, .com is the safer base.

Other extensions (.io, .co, .design)

Popular among developers, design studios, startups:

  • .io — tech startup standard, €40-60/year, prestigious in software circles
  • .co — .com alternative, €20-40/year
  • .design / .studio — niche but pricey (€40-80/year)

These work if your brand is already tech-coded or your .com is unaffordable. For general business, they confuse — nobody remembers "was it .io or .co?"

How to register without getting burned

  1. Don't use GoDaddy. Renewal pricing is hostile, transfers are painful. Use Cloudflare Registrar, Namecheap, or Porkbun instead.
  2. Turn on auto-renewal. Miss a year and your domain drops; squatters grab it within hours.
  3. Enable WHOIS privacy. Don't expose your address and phone — spam follows.
  4. Buy 2-3 years up front. Cheaper than annual, and you don't think about renewal.
  5. Register before public trademark filing. Otherwise squatters monitor trademark applications and grab matching domains to flip back to you.
